You’ve made it through the application progress, the employer really likes the look of your CV and they have now invited you to a face to face video interview.

Even video interviews make us all feel nervous, especially as there are more variables that could potentially go wrong and jeopardize your chances.

To help you control your interview nerves, we have come up with a few tips that will help you to relax and also give you a better chance of smashing your interview and landing your dream job!

Make sure you prepare

Doing your research before your interview is essential. We cannot stress enough how important this is. Researching the company gives yourself a boost in confidence because you know what you are talking about, and it also lets the interviewer know that you are interested in working for them.

Interviewers will appreciate, as well as expect you to have taken the time to research their company, what they do, and what their values are. Preparing all of this beforehand will show the interviewer your eagerness for the job, which is important to do.

This might sound obvious, but you don’t want anything to happen that could distract you mid-interview.

Dress to impress

Most employers expect you to dress smartly and look professional even for a video interview, but this is not always the case. Some companies, especially startups, prefer casual wear. There are even some companies that have a relaxed dress code but would expect someone to be smartly dressed in business wear for an interview.

The best advice we have here is to check. Being aware of this prior to the interview would be beneficial and also another thing that you don’t have to worry about.

Just be yourself

Although this may sound very cliche, just being yourself and being honest is essential in an interview.

The company wants the right person for the job, but you also want the right company for you. If you find yourself not getting the job because you are not the right fit, don’t let it get you down. Changing yourself to suit the company is never a good idea. Being yourself actually means that you come across more natural. There is no point in wasting your time or the interviewer’s time by not being yourself.

Ask questions

At the end of every interview, you will usually be asked whether you have any questions, and “no” is the easy response, but that does not mean its right.

Asking questions about the company and job gives you another chance to show your enthusiasm and give you another chance to leave the interviewer impressed. Think about what will be important to you if you decide to work for this company. Career progression? Career progression? Also, do some research and ask about specific things that you’ve seen and read. Some advice here would be to have a few questions ready to ask so that you can feel confident and avoid the awkward “no” at the end of the interview.

Good questions will also give you the chance to find out some important information about the company, that could be the deciding factor if you are offered the job.
